John Battersby
"Well, I think the image of Africa is probably the single issue in terms of attracting investment. Because as we heard at the investment conference today and as we have heard at many investment conferences, those companies which have a long-standing business relationship in Africa are doing very well and getting good returns. The prospects are very good. Yet the image and perceptions of Africa that I read in the media are reinforcing old stereotypes as a country blighted by conflict, famine disease and all the rest of it. And they are not focussing on the new Africa that is emerging. Because in order to do that you've got to be a little bit proactive as a journalist. First of all you've got to go out and leave your stereotypes and your prejudices at home, and you've got to go out and look for what's new. And I think the international media is failing spectacularly in doing that for the present moment, which is why this kind of initiative, which brings out creative and insightful reporting going the extra mile in terms of reporting - I think it is very, very important."
