Water and conservation
For many communities across Africa, access to clean, potable water is difficult. Africa is home to 27% of the world's population without access to improved water supply but only shares 9% of global freshwater resources. This equates to over 300 million people in Africa that do not have access to improved drinking water sources.

Over the past few years Guinness Nigeria has made substantial investment in water projects with support from the Diageo Foundation and other partners. The borehole constructed in Aba gives direct benefit to around 250,000 people and, in Badia, the water borehole benefits over 3,000 students from two schools as well as around 200,000 local residents. The water projects have been a great success story in Nigeria. This year Guinness Nigeria plans to build a further three in the northern, eastern and western parts of Nigeria.

East Africa Breweries Ltd (EABL) has drilled two water boreholes in Thika, in Central Kenya, Nyatigo area in Kisumu, western Kenya that will in total benefit over 20,000 residents. A third water project in Makueni District, Eastern Kenya is underway to rehabilitate an existing borehole and install a pump; once completed this will provide more than 55,000 residents and their livestock access to clean and safe water.

Since 2002 Guinness Cameroun have completed six water projects in a high enclave sanctuary in the south west province which for most of these residents was the first time they have seen a flowing tap.

Diageo Africa is supporting a water project in partnership with WaterAid in the capital city of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso to provide access to safe, clean water and effective sanitation and hygiene education to 10,000 destitute people.

Uganda Breweries are committed to a conservation project in partnership with the National Wetlands Programme to create awareness about wetlands issues around Lake Victoria and are working with an external partner to establish a rainwater-harvesting project to provide clean water to 100 rural families in Kapchorwa.

Our water projects also extend to environment conservation. Last year Seychelles Breweries opened a conservation centre on Aride Island, which not only provides a major boost for eco-tourism but also will help strengthen the sustainable management of the island.

Over the past few years we have spent £15 million on commissioning effluent treatment plants in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda to reduce the effluent produced by our production sites into the local waterways and enable us to reuse if need be.
